- What are your thoughts on this limited series of engraved creations of The John Walker?
To have been involved in this series of THE JOHN WALKER limited editions has been an interesting experience, particularly working in China and Singapore when most of my work is done at home. To collaborate with others over designs and ideas is always a stimulating experience.
- What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments in your artistic work or career?
The have been many occasions which have lasting memories from the last 44 years of engraving. Special exhibitions particularly at Patrick Mavros in London, Foxhall Gallery in Washington DC, and the Coronation Festival at Buckingham Palace. Probably the most important moment, however, was when I was granted a Royal warrant to engrave for HM the Queen.
- What is your most important artist tool? Is there something you can’t live without?
The drill I use is the crucial tool I have. Without it I couldn’t engrave!
- Which is more important, efficiency or creativity?
Because the majority of what I do is on commission, efficiency is crucial – producing what people want accurately and in a pleasing way. But, the creativity is probably what they are coming to me for in the first place, so the two are inseparable.
- What qualities do you look for in people you work with, or other artists?
Patience, friendliness, understanding of each other’s respective gifts. Relationships are all important.
- Can you describe how you approach bringing the engraved artworks to life?
My intention is to create on glass designs that not only are pleasing to the eye and accurate in what they portray, but also reflect in some way the care and attention to detail of the Creator, as observed in the world around us.
